Tachybaptus novaehollandiae

Smallest of all the grebes and usually found in pairs. Will most likely dive than flee from danger. Bill is dark and tipps with yellow. Bare skin forms a pale yellow face spot at gape. Eyes are golden yellow. Black head and neck. Rich chestnut coloured stripe extends from behind the eye down the neck. Back is dark brown with silvery-grey underparts. Non-breeding plumage is duller. Gape skin whitens, may even be barely visible. Juveniles have a black and white face stripe.
