Peppergrass
Grey Heron

Ardea cinerea cinerea
Grey, black and white heron. Can be easily distinguished from the Purple Heron by its white head and neck, paler colouring with no rufous on body, stockier build and thicker (less snake-like) neck. Black band runs from above the eye to crest. Juveniles have a dark grey crown, no crest and are more uniformly grey. Flight is slow with heavy wing beats which shows the contrast between the black flight feathers and pale grey coverts. Most active during dawn and dusk.
